As at the age of six a change externally expressed in the form of limbs grown longer and replacement of primary teeth occurs with children. They enter games with a predetermined goal and respect appears in their attitude toward adults, from role models the latter turn into beloved authorities. Rudolph Steiner explainеd that these changes result from the fact that life-forces have completed their job of individualization of physical bodies. Now these forces are at the disposal of mind and children are ready for the process of studying.
To be students they should have developed imagination (the ability for internal building of images is necessary for a study process), ability to concentrate (it is built during the childhood by proper alternation of free and concentrating activities), motor flexibility (by applying harmonic movements and by wealth of experiences for the gross and fine motor skills, it leads to spiritual freedom), ability for verbal expression and external balance (it helps children to orient themselves in the surrounding space and is a sign of inner balance).
In the preschool group for 5- and 6-year-olds it is worked towards development of the above capabilities through a lot of practical activities, rhythmic games, work with the senses, artistic activities (painting, modeling, music), figuring out of stories and storytelling, drama and theater. Through motor-skills games children recognize inside, outside, in front, behind, and by sorting, arranging and counting natural objects such as acorns and chestnuts they use mathematical language in a natural way. Children are encouraged to tell stories with their own words, which are also enacted with puppets. Thus, by means of a story and dialogue they develop verbal capabilities. Practical activities such as sewing, weaving and finger knitting develop coordination between hands and eyes and the capability for orientation necessary for the process of handwriting.
